I’m heading into my seventh year as a dental hygienist and this profession humbles me daily. I’ve always had some difficulties in my working hand, as I broke my wrist when I was young. During school I was able to power through difficulties that ultimately I navigated on my own because there was little knowledgeable support on how to protect myself or catch red flags within my grasp from the start. Fast forward five years, I was pregnant and dealing with swelling that crippled my ability to feel my fingers by the middle of the day. I was told after pregnancy the swelling would go down and I would “go back to normal”, however that was far from the truth. I developed Dequervains, a type of tendonitis on top of my carpel tunnel symptoms, it was debilitating. I went back to work three months postpartum with little improvement and made it work, but my grasp severely suffered in order to avoid some pain. From the start I was seeing a physical therapist and eventually an orthopedist. The therapy did help with day to day pain but when working it all seemed to come back. Six months back in the office I took a hands on instrumentation course where I met Michaela, who spotted my problems within minutes of seeing me work. I left feeling defeated to say the least. My grasp was garbage at this point and not only making work much harder but furthering my hand pain. I needed her to even see the problems I was causing. I reached out and Michaela and I spent the next few months meeting via face time discussing my struggles, pain points, and how to hold an instrument, to provide me with the most efficient scaling technique. We went back to the basics. It was more valuable than any other class I’ve taken. I still have moments when I struggle or feel a twinge, or numbness, but I am now able to take a step back, evaluate my grip and readjust to hopefully ensure a painless future in hygiene. I truly love this profession, but without her help I know my time would have been cut short, and worse I would have been doing a disservice to my patients.
